Optical Characterization

In this presentation, three fundamental optical characterization techniques employed in Materials Science in general, and in Nanoscience in particular, will be explored: UV-visible absorption, photoluminescence and Raman scattering, all of them involving inelastic processes arisen from the interaction between light and matter. Despite the existence of a huge variety of techniques, the main properties of thin films and nanostructured materials, concerning their electronic and structural/vibrational properties, can be obtained via these three techniques. Bearing in mind their application in Nanoscience, their fundamentals will be introduced, and some general examples will be given.
