Thin film growth under the effect of elastic stress
The seminar will focus on the nucleation and growth of thin films by molecular beam epitaxy. I will discuss first the structure and morphology of surfaces. Then I will address the different processes of mass transport occurring at surfaces during thin film growth and the conditions for the occurrence of surface morphology instabilities. Typical examples of growth processes measured by scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron microscopy will be described. At last we will discuss the role of the epitaxial relationship between the substrate and the deposited film.
